PRK Surgery in Nevada – The Alternative to LASIK

PRK Vision Correction Procedure

What is PRK?

PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, is a laser eye surgery that corrects various vision conditions that cause blurry vision, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. This procedure works by removing cells on the eye’s surface and then reshaping the cornea with a laser. PRK surgery is similar to LASIK, as both alter the cornea’s shape to correct refractive errors, but differ in their advantages, and recovery time. After full recovery, most patients achieve excellent vision making it a highly effective alternative to LASIK.

The Benefits of PRK

PRK involves removing the cells on top of your cornea with a chemical solution or through another technique, as opposed to the corneal flap created during LASIK. PRK is often considered a safer alternative to LASIK when it comes to the healing process, because the eye’s surface can naturally regrow while protected under a contact lens which only takes a few days. Most PRK patients may be less likely to experience  dry eye syndrome after the procedure when compared to LASIK.

What is the History of PRK? Is it Safe?

PRK eye surgery became FDA Approved in 1995 in the U.S., and was the first eye surgery to use a laser to reshape the cornea, as opposed to a scalpel. Although patients originally underwent the procedure to correct myopia (nearsightedness), the range of prescriptions that can be treated has since improved and PRK can now be used to correct both astigmatism and farsightedness. In fact, LASIK of Nevada’s own Dr. Richard C. Rothman was one of the first surgeons to perform PRK in the western United States and has been helping patients improve their vision using PRK for nearly 30 years!

Am I a Good Candidate for PRK Eye Surgery?

Find Out Today!

If you’re looking to improve your vision, the answer is most likely yes! For PRK, the most ideal candidates include those who have very active lifestyles and are looking to achieve outstanding vision, as some activities can disturb the corneal flap created during LASIK. PRK is also great for those who aren’t a candidate for LASIK due to thin or scarred corneas. If you’re at least 18 years of age with normal eye health and a stable vision prescription, PRK may be perfect for you.

Our doctors will be able to assess your total eye health and vision to determine if you’re a good fit for PRK during a consultation. Take our self-test to see if PRK may work for you!

What Can You Expect During PRK Surgery?

This outpatient procedure only takes a few minutes to complete and is favored for its incredibly simple process. You will remain awake for the surgery, but your doctor will use very strong numbing eye drops so you don’t feel the excimer laser reshaping the eye surface.
